Companies with employees in the highly industrialised Guangdong province in southern China face steeply rising labour costs.
China Daily has reported that the local authorities in the province, which has many thousands of people working in textile factories, wants workers’ salaries to double in the next five years, with every employee also having access to medical insurance.
“We are confident that we can achieve 14% annual growth [in salaries],” said Zhang Fengqi, deputy director of Guangdong’s labour and social security department.
Some experts are concerned that increases in salaries will force some investors and businesses to leave the province, but residents welcome the decision.
“The plan indicates that the government really cares about the common people,” said factory worker Lin Jinghua.
