Chinese cotton mill use may fall 10%

05/01/2009
The International Cotton Advisory Committee claims global cotton mill use will total 24.5 million tons in 2008/09, down 7% compared with 2007/08 data. One of the most significant developments is the predicted reduction in Chinese cotton mill use, which could fall 10% to 9.8 million tons.

According to the committee, mainland
China is the world’s largest cotton consumer, accounting for approximately 40% of world cotton mill use. Cotton mill use is also expected to fall in India and Pakistan
, the second and third largest cotton consumers.

As a result of the decline, world trade is expected to fall 17% in 2008/09 to 6.9 million tons, the lowest level in six seasons. Chinese imports are expected to fall one million tons to 1.5 million tons in 2008/09.
