The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) decided on January 2 to close its textile mills for 15 days because of power shortages. It hopes this action will prompt the government to act on behalf of the country’s textile sector.

Senior vice chairman, Anees Khawaja Muhammad, said: “We have no other option except shutting down textile units in prevailing situation when power load-shedding duration had increased to 12 hours and natural gas supply was suspended." According to Mr Anees Khawaja, more than a million workers will be directly affected by the closure of its 200 textile mills, while as many as five million people could be affected indirectly.
