International year of natural fibres begins

06/01/2009

The United Nations has nominated 2009 as the International Year of Natural Fibres.

It aims to draw attention to and stimulate demand for natural fibres, to encourage governments to respond appropriately to problems facing natural fibre industries, to foster international partnership among natural fibre industries, and to promote the sustainability of those industries.

The resolution states that “the diverse range of natural fibres produced by many countries provides an important source of income for farmers, and thus can play an important role in contributing to food security and in eradicating poverty.”
