Sweatshirt fabric in pure linen

French textile manufacturer Safilin has produced a specially woven linen fabric that it believes will work exceptionally well in sweatshirts.

Nicolas Gausset, sales executive at the Nord-Pas-de-Calais-based company—a specialist in linen—told sportstextiles.com that the product offered all the qualities of linen (purity, sustainability, softness, skin-friendliness, and the ability to absorb 40% more moisture than cotton), while still presenting an attractive optino for sportswear brand.

A partner company in Burgundy came up with a special cutting technique to make one side of the fabric—the side that would sit next to the skin—look and fill sponge-like, emphasising its absorption capability. The outer side is as smooth as jersey fabrics made from cotton and other fibres for the sweatshirt market.

Another benefit is that the fabric is lighter in weight.

“We know that linen is a more expensive option, and that this idea will probably not be of interest to brands that focus on mass production, such as Nike or adidas. However, it’s also true that linen has prestige and all the natural benefits that have been associated with it for so long. For this reason, we believe brands such as Lacoste may be interested in using it in their top-range athleticwear collections. We certainly hope so.”
