Kurabo launches Fresh idea
11/02/2009
Japanese yarns and textiles manufacturer Kurabo has launched a deodorising version of its treated cotton product, Qwon.
Qwon Fresh is cotton that has been subjected to the company's material restructuring technology (MRT) to provide deodorising functionality.
MRT works by applying electron beams to cotton to activate the molecules in it. After this, Kurabo can apply a series of "functional agents" to the activated molecules to give the restructured cotton fibre new functionality on what the Osaka-based company has called "a semi-permanent basis".
In the case of Qwon Fresh, a simple test with ammonia showed that the treated fibre absorbed the chemical much faster than regular cotton.
Kobayashi Yasuhiro, assistant to the section chief in the yarn sales section of the company, explained to sportstextiles.com that treating the cotton at molecular level means the features customers want to add to cotton won't wash out. He said several customers in Japan were already interested in the idea for performance underwear applications.
