Cellulosic fibres' market-share to grow
13/02/2009
Manufacturer of cellulosic fibres Lenzing has carried out a piece of research that suggests this type of fibre is likely to grow its share of the fibre market if global prosperity grows.
The company's figures suggest that in 2010 global textile consumption will include 45 million tonnes of synthetic polymers, including polyester, polyamide, elastane, polypropylene, polyurethane, acrylic and PTE.
Cotton consumption will be 29 million tonnes, according to the same Lenzing study, while garment manufacturers will use 1 million tonnes of wool.
Cellulosic fibres, including viscose, modal and lyocell will account for around 5 million tonnes, a bigger share of the fibre market than these products (several of which Lenzing manufactures) have ever had before.
Lenzing daws the conclusion that increasing prosperity in developing markets drives growth in the consumption of cellulosic fibres, but has so far issued little information on why this should be the case.
We hope to publish more information about this in a forthcoming issue of WSA magazine.
