Melba Industries seeks government help

A company that supplies protective clothing to fire brigades and the military in Australia is seeking government assistance to stay in business.

Melba Industries is in the hands of administrators Matt Byrnes and Greg Keith of Grant Thornton, which is intending to sell the company. Mr Byrnes said immediately that, because the company is an exclusive supplier of protective clothing to public sector entities, he and his colleague intended to ask for government support.

He said he expected government agency customers to honour their contracts, but added that he also intended to approach the Federal Government to seek financial assistance.

The company, which at the moment employs 170 people, was founded in 1934 as a warp knitter manufacturing underwear and fabrics. As well as its domestic business, it exports to the US, South Africa, Thailand, Pakistan and China.
