Sun Dry launches quick-drying swimsuit fabric
27/02/2009
New York-based Sun Dry Technologies has launched a new swimsuit fabric that, it claims, can keep its shape and colour like the best in the business, with the added advantage of being quick-drying.
The fabric, Sun Dry Swim, uses water-based nanotechnology to develop what the manufacturer calls "an invisible mesh film" around each fibre to provide a permanently hydrophobic surface without interfering with the fabric weave. Water cannot adhere to the fabric and the fibres cannot soak water up, making swimsuits made from it quick to dry. Wearers need only shake the water off, or leave the suit to drip-dry in minutes, Sun Dry says.
It says the treatment it uses is environmentally friendly, kind to the skin, and "UV-stable".
Sun Dry manufactures its own swimsuits, but also makes its fabrics available to other manufacturers.
At the time of the launch, the company's sales manager, Amy Hardin, commented: "Why would you want a bathing suit that absorbs water, holds it next to your skin, and stays wet for a period of time? Our textiles are created using proven and safe materials nanotechnology, similar to technology used to make fabrics for splash and stain proof apparel. The fabrics are ideal for swimming and other active water sports."
She went on to say that Sun Dry's children's swimsuits offer the additional feature of a sun protection factor of 50, which, thanks to the quick-drying nature of the fabric, is not compromised by absorbing water. "As a mother, I've found these bathing suits an essential time-saver, especially when we go to the cottage and the kids are swimming every day," she said. "My kids aren't in wet bathing suits all day at the beach, and at the end of the day their suits are dry. I don't end up with a bag of damp bathing suits to rush to wash and get hung up as soon as we get home. I just wait until the next morning to give the suits a quick rinse, shake to dry and their suits are ready for the day."
