Cotton industry delegates offered preview of new arts centre

14/09/2018
Delegates at the International Cotton Association’s trade event in Hong Kong (October 17 and 18) will be among the first people to see at close hand the territory’s new Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile.

This new hub for art and culture is not yet open to the public but delegates at the cotton industry gathering will have a preview tour of the building.

The centre in Tsuen Wan is located in what were, at one time, the three largest cotton-spinning mills in Hong Kong. They were owned by DH Chen, who earned the soubriquet ‘King of Cotton Yarn’. The changes in the textile supply chain that we have all lived through meant the mill had to close in 2008 and the site fell into disrepair.

In 2014, however, Mr Chen’s granddaughter, Vanessa Chen, decided to revitalise the mill and transform it into the new arts and culture centre.
