Louisiana produces smallest cotton crop in 60 years

12/06/2009

The US Department of Agriculture has reported that Louisiana’s 2008 cotton crop is the smallest since 1946.

In total, cotton farmers in the southern state produced 280,000 bales of cotton last year, a decline of 60% on the year before.

The department said the main reasons were that farmers had decided to plant less cotton as they pursued better profits from alternative crops. Then, the state was once again hit by extreme weather events, with Hurricanes Gustav and Ike causing widespread damage in September. Of 300,000 acres planted, only 240,000 were harvested.
