Eco-textiles turn heads in Copenhagen

The Nordic Fashion Association (NFA) held a special event to coincide with the COP15 UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in mid-December, with the aim of raising awareness about sustainability within the fashion industry. The event was called the NICE (Nordic Initiative Clean and Ethical) Fashion Summit.

The association appointed CLASS, an international frum for textile and design with a focus on 'eco-sensitive' products, as the supplier of textiles for the event.

In a bid to show fashion industry decision makers that sustainability and textiles can be both aesthetically appealing and responsibly produced, CLASS provided over 20 leading Nordic designers with a range of fabrics that were incorporated into 40 garments. The selection included recycled and repurposed textiles, organic and natural and a range of innovative renewable fabrics.

A prize of 50,000 Danish kroner for the best design at the event went to Saara Lepokorpi from Finland for a short dress and jacket combination made from a mix of materials from Italian fabric producers. This included 100% organic wool from Lanificio Zignone, a 100% Ingeo fibre from Fa-ma Jersey and new milk-wool-viscose and viscose-silk blends from Olimpias.

Ms Lepokorpi received her prize from
Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.
