Asian textile designers to exhibit at UK university
Textile designers from Japan and China are to exhibit a collection of innovative designs at Nottingham Trent University from January 18 to February 17. Using their skills as artists and designers, their scientific knowledge and modern technology, Professor Junichi Arai and Dr Kinor Jiang have created striking combinations of colour and texture for the Metallic Sound exhibition.
The fabrics, which capture the essence of oriental style with a contemporary direction, will be on show for the exhibition in the university’s Bonington building, home to its School of Art and Design.
The exhibition forms part of an exchange with Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Institute of Textiles and Clothing, which has strong educational and research links with Nottingham Trent University. Academics Dr Katherine Townsend, Dr Amanda Briggs-Goode, Rosemarie Goulding and PhD students Joy Buttress and Devabrata Paramanik, from the School of Art and Design, showed their textile research work in Hong Kong in December as part of the Capturing Rhythm and Space exhibition.
Dr Katherine Townsend, MA programme leader for Applied Design Futures in Nottingham Trent University’s School of Art and Design, has coordinated both exhibitions. She said: “We thought examples of both Professor Arai's and Dr Jiang's work could form the basis of an inspiring textile exhibition that would demonstrate how innovation is borne out of research through rigorous experimentation with materials and technology. We were obviously delighted when both artists accepted the university’s invitation.”
