Could textiles present a solution to dehydration?

A graduate of University of the Arts London has envisaged a way textiles could provide a solution to a world with scarce water resources and will present her findings in London next week.

Jaime Tai, who has a master’s degree in material futures, suggests a natural sugar that protects cells from dehydration could be embossed into fabric.

The trehalose would then be delivered to the skin when the wearer is dehydrated.

She said: “Whether on Earth or other planets, the human race may need to adapt to environmental conditions drastically different from those in the present.”

The talk is part of the Intelligent Optimist Event Series at Central Saint Martins and takes place on September 22.
