Novozymes claims carbon breakthrough for clothing

Danish biotechnology company Novozymes claims to have developed a solution to improve the quality of fabrics while reducing water usage and carbon emissions.
The new technology, which can replace chemical additives with all-natural enzymes, was exhibited in Milan at the Danish design initiative SHOWHOW between April 14–19.
SHOWHOW is an initiative by the Danish Design Center that was introduced during the Design Week in Copenhagen last year. With Italy’s growing interest in sustainable solutions, the exhibition now moved to Milan to showcase Danish efforts within the arena of sustainable fashion, food and mobility.
Novozymes says “elemental textiles” have the potential to decrease environmental impact from textile production by saving 70,000 litres of water and 1 tonne of carbon dioxide per tonne of knitted fabric during the process of creating sustainable clothing. It claims the full savings potential of this technology adds up to 630 billion litres of water and 9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum, and that it is “cost-neutral” to implement.
