M&S stands by wellness underwear

Retail group Marks & Spencer has spoken out in defence of a product that uses microencapsulation technology to combat cellulite.

The company has been selling its Anti-Cellulite Firm Control Waist and Thigh Clincher underpants since the start of this year. They contain microcapsules of caffeine, to slim and tone, vitamin E to protect against ageing and aloe vera to smooth the skin. Tiny amounts of each ingredient are released onto the skin by abrasion as the wearer moves around. Each pair has a retail price of around £30.

At the end of April consumer rights organisation Which published comments from two consultant plastic surgeons and a dermatologist claiming that tight-fitting pants could produce a similar effect without any of the wellness ingredients. Tight fabric can squeeze fluid out of the tissue, they said, temporarily smoothing cellulite.

In a statement, Marks & Spencer said: “This garment is clearly labelled and we refute claims that it could be misleading to customers. It contains ingredients widely used in creams to reduce visible signs of cellulite and the fabric has been independently tested by a specialised laboratory under controlled conditions.”
