Adidas unveils new WNBA uniforms

11/04/2011

German sportswear brand adidas has unveiled new Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) uniforms for the US, with Revolution 30 technology and women’s basketball specific Techfit base layers. Designed and developed by adidas and using the same technology on NBA courts, adidas claims the uniforms are 30% lighter and dry twice as fast as previous WNBA uniforms to help keep athletes cooler, drier and more comfortable on the court. All 12 WNBA teams will wear the new uniforms beginning this season, which starts on June 3, 2011.

“As competitors we want every advantage we can to play our best on the court,” said 2008 WNBA ‘Most Valuable Player’, Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks. “Lighter uniforms that keep us cooler and drier on the court will keep us from getting too hot or uncomfortable so we can focus on our game and play even better.”

The new uniforms, which are made from 60% recycled materials, feature adidas’ ‘Formotion’ technology which the brand says reduces seams, decreases friction between the garment and the player’s skin and optimizes the player’s natural movement through specially constructed material. Adidas reduced the uniforms’ weight and increased player comfort by switching front and back numbers from heavier, dense materials to breathable mesh. The new uniform are said to absorbs moisture in less than three seconds as a result of adidas ‘Climacool’ fabrics, which move heat and sweat away from the body through a combination of moisture management materials, ventilation channels and three dimensional garments, helping the uniform dry twice as fast.

“Our goal at adidas is to help make athletes lighter, faster and stronger, whether you’re playing in the WNBA Finals or a pick-up game with your friends,” said Lawrence Norman, adidas vice president, Global Basketball. “As the official outfitter of the WNBA, we work closely with the league to constantly innovate and improve products to help the best basketball players in the world become a step quicker and jump higher.”

Sal LaRocca, executive vice president, NBA Global Merchandising, said: “Our partnership with adidas has enabled us to provide our players with the best apparel and equipment to play the game. These new uniforms with Revolution 30 technology will ensure our players are competing with the most advanced uniform system available.”
