Speedo takes blogger to court

Swimwear brand Speedo is suing an Australian blogger for breach of copyright, claiming that his website is damaging the brand.

Legal proceedings began recently in the Federal Court in Canberra, Australia, aimed at blocking websites run by 24-year-old Dave Evans.

Speedo claims that the content on the website is offensive and that the regular use of the word Speedo represents breach of copyright. The company has asked the court to restrict the use of domain names using the term Speedo. It has also lodged a claim for an unspecified amount of damages.

Mr Evans wrote on his blog that he should be allowed to continue to use the word Speedo because it has become a “generic term”.

He wrote that he would not be appearing in court to contest the lawsuit, because he could not afford a corporate lawyer.
