Custom-made shoe for Ironman athlete

Danish athlete Rasmus Henning will wear a custom-made Ecco Biom shoe to compete in the 2011 Kona Ironman event in Hawaii on October 8.

Ecco said the shoe had been specially designed to the unique specifications of the Copenhagen-born athlete's running style, including an increased forefoot sole area to match his increased forefoot strike.

Reduced material in the heel lowers the weight of the sole, while a larger-than-usual mesh upper will give increased breathability in the hot conditions in Kona. In addition, a new drainage system inside the sole will take water away from the inside of the shoe.

The Biom team created two prototypes of the shoe and took on board feedback from the athlete before coming up with the final product.
