Ghana gives new Puma shirts their debut

16/01/2012
Ghana’s national football team wore a new shirt design from Puma for the first time in a friendly match against South Africa on January 15. The match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was part of the teams’ preparations for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The tournament runs from January 21 until February 12.

Until the start of January, doubts continued over the Ghanaian team’s chances of taking possession of the new Puma kit in time for the event. Puma had shipped a supply of shirts (white as the first choice, red and yellow as the change strip), but they were detained by customs officers because import duties had not been paid.

The Ghanaian Football Association, which earned a reported $11 million from the team’s success in reaching the quarter-final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, said it did not have the money to pay the import duties and asked the sports ministry for help. The ministry intervened and the shirts reached the team in time.

Reports in Africa said local sportswear manufacturer Mingle was standing by to supply an alternative.
