Brazilian textile association wants action on cheap imports

Reports from Brazil say the national textile industry association, Abit, has asked the government to consider adopting protective measures on clothing imports.

The development leaves open the possibility of clothing from all parts of the world being subjected to quotas and import taxes before reaching consumers in Brazil. The organisation has said that 60 types of product, including swimwear and T-shirts, account for 82% of all clothing imports and that the low prices of many of them are causing severe harm to the domestic industry.

Abit’s president, Aguinaldo Diniz Filho, told local media: “If a shirt comes into Brazil by anti-competitive means it kills the whole value chain, from the planting of the cotton right up to garment construction.”
