China can become more important than US for Bangladeshi apparel

The value of apparel exports from Bangladesh to China almost doubled in the last financial year. Clothing manufacturers shipped goods with a value of $100 million in financial year 2011-2012 compared to $52.81 in 2010-2011 and just 18.9 million in 2009-2010.

Officials at the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) have explained that more than 200 apparel items can now be exported to China duty free. The association’s vice-president, Siddiqur Rahman, recently told the Dhaka-based Financial Express: “China is a very good potential market for Bangladeshi products and it has the possibility of growing to a greater volume for us than the US.”

He said that apparel manufacturers in China now want to focus on high-tech, high-end products. So, China will have to rely on other apparel-producing countries to supply lower-end items for its domestic market.

“Being the second-largest apparel maker and very close to China, we have a great chance to grab the market if we can raise production,” said Mr Rahman.
