BGMEA wants duty-free access to Brazil and the US

The president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Siddiqur Rahman, has sent a letter to the US Ambassador to Bangladesh asking for duty-free access for ready-made garment (RMG) products.

The US currently exports duty-free cotton to Bangladesh. Mr Rahman said that exports of cotton from the US would grow if apparel made using it in Bangladesh received duty-free access back into the country. He argued it would be a win-win situation for bilateral trade. In June 2015, the US suspended Bangladesh’s access to the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP).

The BGMEA has also made contact with the government of Brazil to emphasise that it is a potential market for apparel from Bangladesh. It highlighted, however, that the high import duty of 30-35% was preventing its growth. It has asked for duty-free access to the Brazilian market for Bangladeshi apparel made from cotton imported from Brazil.
