BGMEA says Bangladesh needs “trade-friendly” atmosphere

30/01/2015
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president, Atiqul Islam, led a demonstration outside the organisation’s own headquarters at the end of January to raise awareness among politicians of the need for what he called “a trade-friendly atmosphere” in the Asian country.

Political tensions have intensified in Bangladesh since the start of the yeaer, with violent clashes between supporters of the two main parties. BGMEA fears this is putting western apparel brands and retailers off Bangladesh, pushing them towards sourcing from countries such as Cambodia, Vietnam and Pakistan instead.

Bangladesh’s garment exports declined by almost 3.2% year on year in the first 11 months of 2014. Exports to Europe went up, but with a lower growth rate than those achieved by rival manufacturing countries in Asia.
