Sri Lanka’s apparel sector receives boost from India

Sri Lankan minister Basil Rajapaksa has thanked India for granting an additional apparel quota of five million pieces under a free-trade agreement with no restrictions on fabric sourcing.

Minister Basil Rajapaksa said Sri Lanka welcomes India’s help to revive the handloom and power loom industries that will provide employment opportunities, according to local press.

India and Sri Lanka have embarked on a joint programme to renew the fabric production sector as there is growing demand, both externally and domestically. The Sri Lankan government spends a large amount of money importing fabric for school uniforms, said Mr Rajapaksa, and the investment will help to address that.
