Sri Lanka aims to double apparel exports in two years

Sri Lanka’s apparel sector earned revenues of $4.3 billion in 2013, which the government wants to double by 2016.

Its president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, is targeting $10 billion by 2016 and has said it should be the in world’s top 10 apparel exporting countries by 2020.

Speaking at the Sri Lanka Institute of Textile and Apparel in Ratmalana, the minister of industry and commerce, Rishad Bathiudeen, thanked the president for providing triple deductions in the last budget for research and innovation, which has encouraged strong performance of the sector.
