The Indian government has signed a deal to set up a women’s community learning centre in the Sri Lankan town of Ampara, where vocational training including garment making will be offered to destitute or war-affected women. This will create 20 master trainees and 100 grassroot trainees over a two-year period.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by YK Sinha, high commissioner of India, and Chandrani Senaratne, secretary to the Sri Lankan ministry of women and child affairs. The project aims to give the women skills and contribute to their economic empowerment and was Indian NGO the Self Employed Women’s association (SEWA) as an implementing partner.

The Indian government is already engaged in a similar project in the Sri Lankan city of Batticalao. Since June 2010 more than 1,500 destitute or war-affected women have been trained in seven vocational areas including textiles and garments and business development.
