Liberia to build modern textile centre

Local media reports that the Lofa Weaving Centre is part of the government’s inclusive growth agenda and continues its support of local production by encouraging SME participation in the Liberian cotton industry.
“We are very excited to be at this juncture with a project that will have a positive impact on the Liberian textile sector,” said Ellen Pratt, deputy minister for commerce and industry. She added that this is the first flagship project under the Liberian Innovative Fund for Empowerment (LIFE), which is designed to promote the industry.
The centre will include a weaving component, tailoring shop and areas for the display and storage of products. Mrs Pratt added that the government is starting the project in Kolahun District because it is the seat of the weavers but that there are plans to expand the initiatives to others areas of the country.
Manu Kamara, acting Deputy Minister for Small Business Administration (SBA), said that the department would oversee the project and offer training to the weavers, especially the women, to help them add value to their products.
