Turkey and China drive growth in textile production

Emerging countries, headed by the manufacturing hubs of Turkey and China, led the way with a 6.1% increase in textile production and a 3.6% rise in garment manufacturing. Developed nations saw slower growth of 1% in textiles and 4.2% in garments.
The report showed that Turkey recorded the strongest growth in textile production at the start of 2016 with an 8.2% increase, followed closely by China where production increased 7.3%. Mexico (4%), India (2.4%) and Indonesia (also 2.4%) also performed well. The news was less positive in Brazil, where textile production fell 15.8%. South Africa suffered a dip of 0.7%.
Turkey was also the best performer in terms of garment manufacturing, with a 12.2% increase in output in the first quarter. Mexico and India, with respective growth of 4.9% and 3.5%, also registered growth. Peru’s garment manufacturing output was down 3.4% compared to the first quarter of 2015.
