Uganda spends $888 million annually on textile imports despite having textile factories operating in the country, according to President Yoweri Museveni. He made this statement during his state of the nation address in Kampala on May 31.

President Museveni said that many of the products imported into Uganda could be manufactured in country to save money. This includes leathergoods, which the country spends $220,000 importing each year.

"All these can be made here; fortunately, the investors are here. They just need a good atmosphere for investment," he said.

The President ordered all government institutions to buy products made in Uganda "provided they are of good quality and comparable prices." He added that poor quality should not be an excuse to import, rather that buyers should “discuss with the manufacturers how it can be improved.”

"All the uniforms for the army, the police, the prisons service, the Uganda Wildlife Authority and medical services must be bought locally," he insisted.
