The government Ghana plans to invest more than $4 million to train young people the skills needed to work in the textile and apparel industry, according to ministry of employment, Haruna Iddrius. The programme to train the first batch of 2,000 from Ghana’s youth employment industry is expected to get underway once the investment needed is confirmed.

The government is targeting training for 5,000 people including women who have migrated from rural to urban areas in search of jobs, Mr Iddrius said during a visit to a factory in the capital city of Accra. The factory belongs to apparel company Dignity DRTR, who have agreed to offer jobs to 2,000 of the trainees upon completion of the programme. The remaining 3,000 will be offered employment at other textile and apparel companies.

The ministry of employment and labour relations and the ministry of gender and social protection will work alongside various textile and apparel companies to administer the training. It forms part of an initiative by Ghanaian president John Dramani Mahama to boost the textile and apparel sector so that it can lead the country’s industrial revolution.
