Sri Lanka to set up mini garment factories

17/05/2016
The Sri Lankan government has approved a proposal to establish mini garment factories in the country’s underdeveloped provinces with the aim of empowering women.

Local media reported that 150 factories will be set up in several rural areas including Eastern and Uva Provinces after a proposal by Rishad Bathiudeen, Sri Lanka’s industry and commerce minister.

Local women will be chosen by the programme to receive training in tailoring from the Sri Lanka
Institute of Textile and Apparel as well as learning about entrepreneurship from the National Entrepreneurship Development Authority and the Industrial Development Board. Priority will be given to women from displaced families or those who have been widowed by the civil war.
