Sri Lanka to investigate plantain and pineapple trees for textiles

The Sri Lankan government is funding researchers at Ruhuna University Agriculture Faculty in Matara to look into textiles from bamboo fibre and plantain trees.

The Southern Provincial Industries Minister said he wants to explore the opportunity after seeing China and Philippines pressing on with similar devlopments.

The ministry is also exploring the possibility of using fibre from wetakeiya (a thorny plant) and pineapple trees for textile production.
