Sri Lanka's largest intimate apparel manufacturer, MAS Holdings, is to invest $70 million to set up an automated knitting plant which will become one of the largest in the region.

The company supplies intimate lines to international companies including Lululemon, Victoria's Secret, La Senza, H&M and Athleta.

The new plant, at Thulhiriya, within the MAS Fabric Park, will significantly increase the company’s scope, although no details of the specific technology have been released.

"There is a lot of innovation and technology involved in this project, which makes this a strategic step for MAS and Sri Lanka in the field of textile and apparel," Sri Lanka's investment promotion agency said in a statement.

This is the largest investment by MAS Holdings in its 25-year history. The company has 28 facilities around the world and employs 55,000 people.
