Liberty among UK companies developing performance fabrics

Among them is Liberty of London, which is looking to add attributes to the fabrics it uses in its gabardines and trench coats, and is working with UKFT, the fashion and textile association, to develop these.
Beryl Gibson, colour and design consultant to UKFT, told sportstextiles.com: “Showerproof and rainproof is a really big area that the mills are trying to work on. From from the traditional Barbour waxed to other, new ways of developing these qualities in the fabrics.
“One fabric we're showing is emerised, closely woven and tumbled with sand, which closes the surface and gives it showerproof qualities. There are a couple of mills using beeswax in Shetland; Abraham Moon's fabric has been dermatologically tested, which is something that's quite exciting.”
Other fabrics on display, all of which had been developed in the past six months, included a high-gloss, wax-finish wool by Halley Stevensons; a 100% wool with a showerproof finish by Hield; a nanosphere-treated, naturally self-cleaning, water-repellent silk by Henry Bertrand; and an environmentally friendly, water-repellent wool by Whiteley & Green.
