The Nigerian government has earmarked $340 million to revive cotton farming and production in the country, according to its minister of agriculture and rural development, Akinwumi Adeshina.

Local press reported that 200,000 hectares of land are to be procured for cotton cultivation this year, and that farmers would be provided with free seeds.

As part of the plan, a new initiative by the south west of the country, supported by the Bank of Industry, aims to create 17.2 million jobs in cotton production and to raise exports to West African countries from its present 5% to 30%.

Local press declared that “the cotton crop may soon spark off an economic revival”.
