More than 120 representatives from the UK’s outdoor industry visited parliament to drum up support for a national campaign to encourage the public to be more active outdoors.

Attendees at the launch of Britain on Foot, organised by the Outdoor Industries Association (OIA), included Under Secretary of State for Health Anna Soubry and Shadow Culture Minister Dan Jarvis, alongside representatives from Visit England, the National Trust, the European Outdoor Group and Sport England.

Dave Turnbull, chief executive of the British Mountaineering Council, said: “The BMC calls on the government to get behind Britain on Foot. It has momentum and, with suitable support, could be a great thing for the nation.”

Andrew Denton, chief executive of the OIA, added: “This project will only succeed if the trade gets behind it and I am hugely encouraged by the response of our sector so far.”
