Garmatex develops quick-drying rival to cotton

Garmatex, a Canada-based developer and manufacturer of fabric technologies, has launched a quick-drying fabric that it claims will rival cotton in the comfort stakes and offers added benefits that took seven years to develop.

Darren Berezowski, Garmatex’s CEO, claims the fabric, Kotinu, is more versatile, more hygienic and more durable than cotton. He also claims it dries faster than any other known man-made fibre in its category.

He said of the research and development stage: “It was an intense process which took several years of mixing and matching hundreds of microfibre filaments, experimenting with various knitting techniques, analysing colour fasting and antibacterial processes.”

He says while a conventional cotton sheet can take 45 minutes to an hour to dry, Kotinu can be washed in warm water and machine dried in under 10 minutes. He also claims the strength of its filament thread means Kotinu can last six times longer than conventional cotton and allows dyes to adhere to its fibre at a higher concentration so the fabric will not fade or break down. A proprietary antimicrobial agent used in Kotinu enables odour and bacterial and fungal control and fibre degradation resistance.

Target customers include brands within sports apparel, fashion, hospitals and police and fire departments.
