US: Outdoor industry sales up in October

23/11/2012
Outdoor industry sales in the US grew in October after a couple of months of declines, with hard goods seeing a 10.8% increase due to sales attributed to Superstorm Sandy.

Apparel sales grew 3.6% to $291.5 million during the month,
according to industry tracker Outdoor Industry Association VantagePoint. Outerwear and baselayers turned in positive results after two months of declines, though the colder weather was not enough to boost sales of insulated jackets.

The outdoor footwear business was held back by sales declines in winter boots and the continued move away from the exposed-toe barefoot footwear business. Overall, outdoor footwear sales were down 2.2% to $211.7 million.

The sale of hard goods surged during the month, as consumers snapped up battery lanterns, torches, stoves, coolers and water bottles just before and in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. Outdoor companies also donated many items - not counted in the sales figures - to hurricane relief efforts.
