Specialist textile compliance, certification and training organisation WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) has issued a statement giving its reaction to the fatal fire at a clothing factory in Bangladesh on November 24.

The fire, at a factory run by the Tazreen Fashions company, killed at least 110 people.

In the statement, WRAP described the incident as “a tragedy of the highest magnitude” and sent condolences to all the families affected.

“WRAP continues to see itself as a stakeholder in the Bangladesh garment industry and we are committed to being a responsive and effective supply chain management partner that helps factories independently verify that they are doing their work in a safe, ethical and socially responsible manner,” it continued. “In the furtherance of that mission, we also aim to be an education resource for factories, especially in the arena of safety. Our comprehensive Factory Fire Safety Training Programme, offered regularly in Bangladesh, is leading the way in this field by providing training not only on fire response but fire prevention.”

The organisation went on to deny media reports suggesting the Tazreen factory was WRAP-certified, saying it had never carried out an audit of the facility. “This tragic fire at Tazreen is a disastrous reminder of how vitally important this issue is,” it concluded. “No loss of life is ever acceptable within the garment industry. Through certification and education, WRAP remains dedicated to its mission of promoting safe, lawful, humane, and ethical manufacturing around the world.”
