Colombia: Sportswear ‘key focus’ at rapidly growing textile fair

23/01/2013
Colombian textile fair Colombiatex de las Americas has attracted record numbers, with 30,000 visitors, 1,500 international buyers and 475 exhibitors expected at the show, currently under way in Medellin.

Organisers said sportswear is a key focus this year, with the introduction of a new pavilion showcasing performance fabrics and activewear. South American swimwear companies such as Rosset and Assatex are showing alongside European counterparts, including Spain’s Ritex.

Carlos Botero, CEO of Inexmoda, the organiser of the fair, said he believed the sportswear sector had the potential to grow rapidly, and that Spain and France would be natural export markets for domestically produced swimwear.

The Colombiatex programme features lectures including ‘What’s new in activewear: a new and revolutionary textile sector’ by Juan Pablo Agudelo, chief operating officer at Medellin-based fitness company Improvement, and ‘Cotton and the Sportive universe’ by Abbey Cook from Cotton Inc. Around 17,000 are expected to listen to the seminars in person or via online streaming.

Colombiatex runs from January 22 to 24 and is expected to generate $120 million of business.
