€130 million plant under construction at Lenzing

Fibre producer Lenzing is constructing a massively expanded production plant for Tencel, which it is billing as “the most modern fibre production line in the world”.

The combined technologies of the Lenzing and the Tencel Group, which were recently merged, are being applied for the first time in the construction of the €130 million plant based at the group’s home in Austria.

The “attractive” energy costs that result from the onsite energy generation, the skilled workforce and proximity to Lenzing’s central research facilities were critical factors in the decision to expand the operation in Lenzing, according to the company. The plant will have a capacity of 64,000 tonnes per year.

Dieter Eichinger, vice-president of Lenzing textile fibres, said: “The developments of the last 20 years are just the beginning of a success story which will continue for many decades to come. Tencel uniquely answers the demands for competitive production costs relative to other fibres with the demands for sustainable production.”

The expansion supports growing demand for Tencel in many new textile and apparel applications, including denim. “Tencel’s smooth fibre surface and moisture management turn jeans into articles of clothing which enhance physical wellbeing,” said the company.

Lenzing celebrated the 20th anniversary of Tencel in December.
