07/03/2013
Sales of alpine/AT boots, alpine boots with a walk mode and rubber/Vibram sole designed for use with alpine touring bindings more than doubled compared with last season, with 55,000 pairs bought. Sales of lighter, more technical AT/Randonee boots were up 60% in value and 41% in volume.
Sales of skins, used on the bottoms of skis to prevent backwards sliding, were up 10%, and sales of action camera were up 40% in value to $25 million and 16% in units to 82,500.
Overall, consumers spent $2.6 billion on snow sports apparel, accessories and equipment during the period, about 1% more than last season.
Equipment sales were down 2% in units and 4% in dollars to $640 million. Apparel sales totalled $1.1 billion, a similar figure to the year-ago period. Accessories sales were up 5% to $913 million.
The late season (February and March) typically brings in about 20%-25% extra in terms of revenue. Increased snowfall and lower temperatures in February and March are helping retailers clear out swollen inventories and should allow for a full recovery from last season’s disappointing sales, according to SIA.
The data was collected from the more than 1,200 snow sports retailers across the country.
