The Affordable Footwear Act is back

The Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA) has issued a statement welcoming the reintroduction of the Affordable Footwear Act (AFA) in the US House of Representatives.

This bill aims to make it cheaper for retailers and brands to import outdoor, athletic and children’s footwear made in lower-cost countries into the US by removing duties. It was introduced in 2011, in a previous session of Congress, but was not enacted.

According to the FDRA, companies importing these shoes into the US paid $2.3 billion in duties in 2012. A number of footwear companies that still manufacture some of their shoes in the US want to keep the duties in place.

If successful, the bill will generate additional savings for consumers, the FDRA argues, and drive more shoe sales, providing opportunities for job growth in the US footwear industry, although only on the retail and distribution side.
