English clubs dominate kit sponsorship deals

Cologne-based sports marketing research group Repucom has said the total value of kit supply contracts with teams in England’s top football division, the Barclays Premier League, increased by 32% in the season just coming to a close, reaching a value of EUR 145.5 million.

“While traditional giants such as Nike, adidas and Puma continue to invest heavily, the surge in income has been driven by the entrance of North American duo Warrior and Under Armour, suppliers of Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively,” Repucom said, reporting the findings of its Kit Supplier Report 2012-13.

Eleven different suppliers are present in the league at the moment, which, according to Repucom, commands 40% of the total value of kit deal contracts in Europe’s top five leagues.

The report put the values of kit supplier contracts to teams in the other four leagues at EUR 84.8 million for Spain, EUR 68.4 million for Italy, EUR 56.8 million for Germany and EUR 33.1 million for France.

Repucom said the reason for the dominance of England’s top clubs is the volume of replica shirts their fans buy. This season the Barclays Premier League’s 20 clubs will sell a combined total of around 5 million replica shirts worldwide, around 1 million more than a year ago, and more than double the volume bought by fans of the 18 clubs in Germany’s top league, the Bundesliga.
