Vaude says its HQ is now “climate neutral”

In celebration of World Environment Day on June 5, German outdoor brand Vaude has announced that it cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 23% in 2012 compared to the previous year.

In addition, Vaude said its corporate headquarters at Tettnang, near Friedrichshafen in south-west, and all the products it makes there are now “climate neutral”.

Vaude compensates for all greenhouse gas emissions it generates at its production plant and its corporate offices. It employs around 500 people in Tettnang and, in addition to its production facility there, also has maintenance workshops, a childcare centre and a distribution centre. It said cutting down on business travel, printed goods, commuting and material consumption in production were the most significant elements of its policy.

“Climate neutrality is an important component in our overall commitment to sustainability,” said Antje von Dewitz, the brand’s chief executive. “We have recognised our greatest challenges and the means at our disposal for further reducing our greenhouse gas emissions over the next few years.”

To compensate for the carbon emissions it continues to produce, Vaude has sponsored a project in rural China to give people there an alternative to traditional coal-burning stoves. Thanks to the project, run by a German not-for-profit organisation called myclimate, people in Shanxi Province have been given clean semi-gasifier stoves that burn biomass, principally from corn waste, to allow them to stop using coal, improving indoor air quality and people’s health, as well as reducing carbon emissions.
