Garmatex markets Kottinu at firefighters

Performance fabric producer Garmatex has completed the testing of its Kottinu fabric to occupational health and safety (OHS) standards for use in garments worn underneath protective wear and says it passes the Canadian standards by a “wide margin”.

It is marketing the fabric at firefighters in the country, and has been testing it in the field for a number of years.

Darren Berezowski, president of the Canadian company, said: "Statistics show that heat/stress exhaustion leading to a heart attack is the number one killer of firefighters across North America. The ISO 17493:2000 test substantiates that the thermal stability of Kottinu exceeds the requirements of section 31.15 of the OHS (British Columbia) standards by a wide margin."

Darrell Smith, an assistant fire chief in a Canadian municipality, suggests other firefighting divisions will adopt the fabric in their workwear: "Firefighters are not dying because they are getting burnt in a fire. Firefighters are overheating and having heart attacks."

Mr Berezowski claims Kottinu lasts six times longer than cotton and added: "The moisture management aspects help the body to moderate the effects of excessive heat build-up as well as regulating the cooling process so there is a less dramatic effect on the body."
