The UK-based Textile Institute is hosting a two-day conference in Manchester in July at which visiting academics and experts from around the world will discuss advances in functional textiles.

Topics include 3D woven fabrics for functional textiles, garment finishing, and compression garments for cyclists.

A contingent from Istanbul Technical University in Turkey will discuss antibacterial efficacy along with prolonged use-life for polyester knitted fabric.

John McLoughlin, Pat Cashman, Jess Power and Jane Ledbury from Manchester University will introduce a smart textile for measuring the impact of energy used in competitive contact sports.

Prof Jinlian Hu from Hong Kong Polytechnic University will highlight water-sensitive shape memory polymers and fibres; and the prospects of functional textiles will be considered by Colin Purvis, a consultant from Spain.

The conference is being held on July 25 and 26, with more details available on the institute’s website.
