New tool for identifying GM cotton in clothing

Two German companies have collaborated on a tool that can identify genetically modified cotton in clothing.

ICA Bremen, a cotton testing centre, has joined DNA analysis firm Impetus Bioscience to offer the service, which they say will help retailers shed light on the supply chain.

“The traceability of cotton varieties in finished textiles is becoming increasingly important, with many retailers and labelling organisations looking for suitable and reliable analytical tools,” said ICA Bremen managing director Kai Hughes.

“Utilising the expertise of Impetus Bioscience, ICA Bremen can now test finished textile garments to identify whether they contain genetically modified cotton, as well as identifying different cotton species such as Pima or Gossypium Barbadense.”
