Italy: Machinery groups to focus on sustainability

The Italian textile machinery association, ACIMIT, has appointed a new president at its annual assembly and said a renewed focus on sustainability was key to “regaining momentum in a competitive landscape”.

Raffaella Carabelli was named president, succeeding Sandro Salmoiraghi.

During 2012, the total turnover of Italy’s textile machinery makers amounted to EUR2.4 billion, declining 11% on the previous year.

Exports accounted for 83% of production, mainly to China, Turkey and India. The association noted that the slowdown was not just in Italy, but had also affected its competitors in Germany, Japan and Switzerland

“Seizing the moment means preempting competitors on issues related to sustainability,” it said, adding that it wishes to follow the example of the fashion and textile industries, which have developed their own models of sustainable development.
